Letting go of your BS

For many of us who live in suffering and are trying to make our lives better, our dreams come true, or just make it through to the next day, often have a hard time believing that there is a power or force outside of our control that could catapult us to what we are desiring.

I am here to tell you that as a recovering control addict, there is NOTHING you can control but you. It only took me 50 years to realize this but now that I am in  what I call, "control recovery" I have found my life to be much lighter in many ways.

You see before this year, my highest value in life was control. If I could control everything then I would not get hurt, I could have everything my way, I could make all of the decisions and always be right. Once I realized this ,BS ( Belief System) was not only hurting me but making me miserable in my life, it opened up a world of possibility that I never imagined.

Women tend to want a lot of control in their lives. I believe this is because we live in fear and anxiety and one of our highest values is security and safety so, having control makes sense. We are under the illusion that by controlling everything and everyone, life will be OK or safe. There are even women who say that control is not important to them, but they covertly control in a very passive way. Trust me I have seen it all... I am an expert and a recovering control addict. And we wonder why we live in suffering?

We have been traumatized by our past life events, believing that these things have happened to us not FOR us and if we take the control, these things will never happen again. What if you were to begin today to look at these life events as gifts?  Love what is happening for you. Try and find the lesson in each situation. How can you grow from this? What will you do different next time? Could you have taken a different path that would have led a different outcome? Be curious about it. When you are curious that's when the juicy learning in your life begins to happen.

So, what happens when you let go of the illusion that you are in control and believe that there is a higher power - the Universe, God, Source Power, whatever you believe in, working 24/7 to assist you in getting all that you desire? We are afraid to trust the very source of creation to guide us to our life's purpose. Instead we are mistrusting and fearful and then we get in our head thinking we are in control.  Why might you ask? Because in this complicated, technology driven, fake world we live in today, we have lost our faith. Faith that the most powerful force is your wingman and is always there to assist you in getting that new job, having a baby, moving across the county for the love of your life, getting the body you want, taking your family on vacation to Hawaii, or what ever it is you want.

Let go of your limiting BS and know in your heart that the once you create your new BS, you will accomplish all that you desire in 2018.

My New Year Freak Out List

Hello beautiful ladies!  I am super busy preparing for the VISION 2018 event that will be held next Saturday. We have a few seats left if you are interested. I can promise you this will change your life. Book your spot here but hurry as there is some pre-work you have to do to maximize your results.

Lets make 2018 the best year ever!!

Lets make 2018 the best year ever!!

So as we enter a new year, I wanted to share with you some of my new favorite things that are making my life more beautiful everyday! Remember that beauty comes from within but sometimes a girl needs a little assistance!

The Hobo Handbag
I have been traveling a lot and wanted the perfect lightweight bag to take to NYC. I have never owned a hobo style handbag and I found this little puppy and fell in love! It is the perfect size, it has extra room for a hat and gloves (which I NEEDED in NYC) and my favorite part, you can actually see inside!! If you have not tried a hobo style bag give one a spin. This paticular one is on sale for 1/2 off right now at Hobo.com

Kevin Murphy Hair Products
I have many challenges with my hair but I have found a product line I love. These products are not cheap but they net results. I am currently using the Angle wash and rinse for colored hair, Doo Over, Bedroom Hair, Shimmer Me Blonde and Hair Resort. The cool thing is the website has a product matchmaker for your hair type. Check it out at Kevin.Murphy.com

CLARINS Double Serum
You know when the cosmetic lady grabs you at Bloomingdales and sits your butt in a chair for a makeover you have some issues! Seriously the CLARINS lady grabbed me as I was walking by and said "Darling your skin is so dry." Um ya it is -15 outside with blowing wind! So I was a sucker for buying this product but so glad I did. It truly is amazing. It is one of the top rated serums on the market. You only need one pump per application. This goes a long way....

The Game of Life AND How to Play It
This book was written in 1925 by Florence Shinn. This book has many gems in it and for those personal development junkies, this is a must have in your library. She hits on all the major points of how to attract what you want into your life! Thanks my friend Julie Preas for giving it to me! You can listen to it on YouTube here

A Personal Trainer
This year at Tony Robbins Date with Destiny I committed to health and vitality as my top value in my life. So when I came home I immediately hired a personal trainer. Best decision ever! Just in a few weeks, I feel stronger, leaner and more powerful. Not to mention, I have lost inches, not so much weight as my goal is to build muscle now that I am a "woman of a certain age." Anyway, if you can afford it do it! Or get an online program and an accountability partner. No more excuses ladies, get out there and move your body! Nothing will make you feel more sexy than working out!

How to Create a Powerful Vision Board

Thank the Lord that it is January. The days are getting longer and spring is on its way! I usually feel a little bittersweet... however, this year I was happy to see move right on down the line. It was a very challenging year personally but there were some major wins as well. I digress on my topic...

The greatest thing about January is that it allows me think about what I am going to visualize for the next year.  What do I want to do? Where do I want to go? Who do I want to go with? What personal goals do I have? What are my health and fitness goals? How do I want to grow my business this year? So many options that it can be overwhelinming on how to begin. The good news is that there is a tried and true method to this madness, it's called a vision board.

While I did not reach all of my goals this year, I am proud of how much work I did personally to overcome some major obstacles in my life. I attended several very powerful personal development seminars that helped me to further my work and understanding of why we live in suffering rather than happiness - more of this to come at VISION 2018. I am so grateful for the experiences I had, my time with friends old and new and all that I have learned.

I also achieved so many things on my vision board but here's the funny thing... many of them came in very unexpected ways. That is the beauty of the process. We want certainty and yet we crave variety. It is the biggest joke the universe plays on us! So as you build your vision board don't get super caught up in the specifics because the universe has a plan for you. You just have to tell it the general direction you want to go.

As a lifestyle coach, I feel very passionate about assisting my clients in curating a beautiful life and creating a vision board is always part of this work.

Making a vision board is a important part of my new year planning. It is fun, it is creative and it gets me focused on exactly what I am craving in my life.

Here are a few of my tips for making a vision board that really works.

#1 Take inventory of what areas of your life you want to focus on.
Is is work, romance, health, food, style, your kids, learning a new talent?  If this was your last year on earth, what would you do? How would you spend your time?  Where would you go?  OK - now you're thinking!  What we put in our minds we curate so better make it what you want. Try and pick only 4-6 areas. And it doesn't have to be a goal but it could be a feeling that you are after.

#2 Remember to focus on you.
What are your cravings, desires, needs, feelings, mood and what makes you feel good and happy inside. Do not compare yourself to others as this is YOUR life not theirs.

#3 Get a notebook out and write down your goal areas and then under each goal list the three things you are going to do in the next 6 months to accomplish this life goal.
This is a VERY important part of the Vision Board Process as writing down your goals and action steps sets your brain up for success.

#4 Get visual
When you are finished with your list, grab some magazines, scissors, a bottle of bubbly or a cup of tea and find images or sayings that help create a visual of your goals. I also like to pick a word for the year. Last year I chose SLAY. I am still working on my word for 2018.

#5 Make your board
Once you have your images you can begin to put them on the board. I recommend not gluing anything down until you have laid it all out.  You use poster board, a cork board, or whatever will work best for you. Remember it should be beautiful as you need to see this every day and night to remind you of your goals for the year.  Once you are done, snap a photo of it so you have it with you at all times. Also share it with one or many of your girlfriends. This public declaration will again help set the intentions even deeper into your brain.

If you want to create your best year ever, I invite you to partake in VISION 2018 - Feel It Girl!
This 1/2 day workshop will provide you with all of the tools and support you need to seriously SLAY 2018!  Learn more HERE and I do hope in the sprit of self care, you will give yourself the gift of an amazing year filled with everything you desire.

What are you seeking?

As I begin to talk openly to more and more women these days, through my work, coaching or sharing doTERRA essential oils, there seems to be one reoccurring theme that keeps coming up. No it is not sex, dieting, exercise, sleep, eating better or more time. These are the issues that "start" the conversation, but in the end, when we start to do a deep dive into what they are really feeling, most women admit to feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious or all three.

I recently attended a wonderful personal development seminar called Heart & Hustle by the amazing Tiffany Peterson. While it was a specific course for doTERRA Wellness Advocates, 80% of the content could be applied to your everyday life. Tiffany is a breast cancer survivor and worked for Franklin Covey the 7 Habits for Highly Effective People, Jack Canfield the author of the Success Principles and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and for Robert Kiyosaki the author of Rich Dad Pour Dad. She is a personal development Queen! During her course I learned several valuable nuggets to make my life more beautiful and I want to share some of them with you along with my own personal routine for self-care.

As part of the course, we spent one hour talking about self-care. This seems to be the buzz word of the moment for women, much like the word "growth mindset" in school settings and certain circles of personal developemt. There is a reason the topic of self-care for women keeps coming up over and over again in blogs, seminars, and articles.

The beautiful Tiffany Peterson and me in Salt Lake City

The beautiful Tiffany Peterson and me in Salt Lake City

Today women have taken it all on -  we wanted it all and we got it, except for equal pay but I digress...We are bombarded with so much information, unrealistic images on social media, running kids here and there, woking all day then working all night at home, not enough time, too little sleep, to much sugar, alcohol, and unhealthy food, no time to exercise.  We have an overwhelming need to try to "control" everything. We lack the skills to set healthy boundaries, always saying yes when we want to say no AND we have a a failing health care system that feeds us drug after drug to numb our pain. We are George Jetson on the treadmill yelling loudly "Jane stop this crazy thing" yet no one is coming to our rescue. And I hate to break it to you, no one will but you.

Don't get me wrong, life is full of ups and downs, highs and lows, pain and pleasure. But I challenge you all today to really ask yourself what are you seeking? The only way to answer that questions to take some time for yourself and do a few simple exercises. I want you to take one hour over this holiday season and sneak away to a quiet place, sit in front of the tree after everyone is in bed or get up before everyone does, go to a coffee shop, have lunch by yourself and do the following things.

1. Create a Joy List - Write dow 10 things that you do to bring you joy then make sure you do one of those things a week.
2. Curate a morning ritual - For me this is waking up 30 mins early to read my daily devotional book called Simple Abundance. My Aunt Susan gave it to me years ago but it is so relevant today. Google Daily Devotional books on Amazon and you will find one just for you. Before you do anything in the morning and I mean ANYTHING, get your coffee or tea and take 10 minutes to read your book by yourself with no distractions. This is your gift to you and it will ground you for what ever is in store for you in your day ahead.
3. Develop a regular nighttime routine - Go to bed at the same time overnight if you can. Your body needs 7-8 hours of good sleep. You will be amazed what you can do the next day with a good nights sleep. I like to visualize and meditate right before I go to sleep. There are great free guided meditations from the Chopra Center.  Also if you are in need of answers, ask the Universe, God, the Spirit, Source Power or whatever works for you with assistance before you go to sleep. Trust me it will come to you the next morning. Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. This works but you have to ask!! It make not come right away but if you ask it will happen.
4. Let go of trying to control everything. Control is a sexy seductress in our lives. We think that if we can control everything in our lives we will have peace and joy and nothing bad will happen because we are managing it all. Things may go along smoothly for a while but this is just an illusion. You cannot control anything but yourself. We make think we can control others behaviors, thoughts, feelings and outcomes but we cannot. All this leads to is disappointment, and remember that whatever we try to have control over actually has control over us. So as Elisa from Frozen would say "Let it go, Let it go."
5. Create a Vision Board -  What do you want in your life? What are your desires, dreams and cravings? Cut out images of these things and create a vision board that you look at several times a day. Mine is in my bedroom. I look at it while I brush my teeth. It is crazy what I put on my board in January and throughout the year that actually has happened and in very unexpected ways. If you need to better understand the law of attraction, watch the movie The Secret. I watch it every New Year's Eve.
6. Read the book You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero - This is one of the best personal development books for women and it is peppered with self-care tips and tricks. Also it is super funny and if you like audio books, it is even better because Jen is the one reading it herself so you get a better feel for her personality. You will laugh and you will cry but you will be a better person after reading it. Order it today!!
7. Learn Self-Love - This one is the hardest for all of us and you know it! Get in front of a mirror and tell yourself that you love the woman you see. We are always focused on our flaws. We live in a world of social media with perfect Instagram images flying our way all day. THAT IS NOT REAL LIFE! It is just a snapshot of a moment in time. And people want us to see their fake perfect life. Everybody and I mean everybody has their own shit so I ask that you start to focus on your strengths and not your shortcomings. Say it to yourself as you look in the mirror. "I love you for your beauty and strength and keeping the whole household together" and whatever else it is you rock at. Do it morning and night. Want some more assistance with this? Read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks.

I am going to stop here for two reasons. One, I do not want to overwhelm you on your self-care journey and two, 7 is my lucky number! Please, please please remember that this is the season of joy and celebration. We all have had so much personal pain and tragedy in our lives, our country and the world this year. It is time for each and everyone of you to take the time and curate your personal ritual for a respite from your daily life. Do this and you will be greatly rewarded.

7 Steps to Curate a More Luxurious Bathroom

Step #1 Clear your clutter

The first step to curating a luxurious bathroom is to clear the clutter. I mean inside and out of every cabinet. Think 5 star hotel declutter. Check Pintrest for some great ideas on decluttering. My process is to take everything out, throw out what I do not use or want and then re-oragnize it. This is your first step to making your bathroom an actual space you want to spend time in!

Step #2 Use a non traditional rug

Using a non-traditntal bathroom rug, elevates your bathroom to living room status pronto! There are so many options out there in every price point. I have found mine at Target.

Step #3 update lighting

Change your lighting and change your bathroom. I love unique lighting in bathrooms. I always  try and have a lamp as well as ceiling lighting or sconces. I love the bling of a chandelier. If you cannot afford a new light buy a can of spray paint in gold, silver, black or whatever color suits your fancy and paint it!

#4 Change out hardware

This actually is the fastest way to update your bathroom. I love the look of this cabinet and the gold gets me going. It is a huge trend right now.  Again, paint your existing hardware if you cannot afford all new handles. I just did it in my kitchen as I needed 53 handles.... that is a lot of $$ for new handles so I painted them all black.

#5 Put up artwork

Artwork can make your bathroom feel like you are at a 5 star hotel. Why should art be limited to the rest of the house? I love art in the bathroom. So many choices to buy or if you are a crafty one, make your own art.

#6 Add Seating

Chose a chaise lounge chair or a garden stool, adding seating can create a more intimate space as well as add a place for your significant other or kiddo to come in and chat with you at the end or beginning of your day.  Maybe you have a stool or old chair in your house. Before you send it to Goodwill, consider repurposing it for the bathroom!

#7 Add a plant or two

I love plants and I am pretty serious about the fact that all of the rooms in my house should have plants. It is good for the air quality and putting a living thing adds another texture to your rooms. If you have a bathroom without natural light, use a good quality imitation plant. You can find them everywhere.

Happy re-decorating!!

Haters Gonna Hate and Why I Love Taylor Swift

"Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, I shake it off, I shake it off. "
Taylor Swift

This should be the anthem for all of us women these days. Why do we have such a hard time "shaking off" what other people think, say and feel about us?  I know intrinsically we all want to be liked or loved at a very deep level. But at the end of the day, not everyone is going to like everyone so we just need to accept this fact of life.

In order for us ladies to get down and dirty with our life's purpose, we are going to have learn how to "shake it off" as we have so many more important things to do than to sit around and worry about what someone else is thinking about us, saying about us, or even worse, spreading nasty rumors about us. We cannot control that. Life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% of how we respond to it.

To be honest, I still still find myself in that self-talk and I am trying to be more conscience about it as I think it is one major thing that adds to my overall anxiety in my life. Just being vulnerable here with you all.

So back to Taylor... I saw Taylor Swift on her 1989 tour in Seattle and I have to say that lady can ROCK a stadium! I love Taylor Swift. I mean she's  beautiful, talented, has super models for besties, wears the perfect shade of red lipstick, dates anyone she wants and can take shit from Kanye West and still come out on top.

If you remember, Swift released Shake it Off as the fist song on her much anticipated 1989 album. She was taking A LOT of heat for changing her music genre from country to pop. She was being criticized for leaving her "roots."  I have to say it was one of the more successful cross-overs I have ever seen. I still am having a hard time with Hootie and the Blowfish's lead singer Darius Rucker as a country singer.  It just isn't working for me. Sorry, I digress.

The point is, this was a brilliant PR move on her part to lead off with this single from her album. It set a tone and posture that she was just going to move forward with her gift of music and do whatever the hell she wanted to do, period . She didn't care what anyone thought about it,  and she moved forward and trusted her gut.  It doesn't matter if you like Taylor Swift or not,  you got to give it up to her for her ability to tell everyone to go to hell in a very nice way (by having one of her most successful albums of all times) and going for it! If you really want to  to understand her mindset, read about her lawsuit she just won for $1 and watch her new video Look What You Made Me Do.Trust me, it does not end how you think it might if you have heard the song.

We need to learn to become more like T-Swizzle and let the comments, opinions of others, or negative thoughts and feelings flow quickly through our bodies and off our backs. We need to laugh at ourselves, find empathy for our shortcomings and be more vulnerable. We cannot let these feelings get stuck inside of us as it will lead to illness, low self esteem, depression and anxiety.  Ann't nobody got time for that!

I learned at the Tony Robbins event UPW, that the quickest way to change your state or your mindset is to physically move your body. So literally "shaking it off" can actually help move you through your negative feelings or thoughts. Anytime you are feeling this way, just change your physical state. Go for a walk, dance, jump up and down, do a couple yoga moves. By simply doing this you can change how you feel and frankly get onto the more important things in your life!

So with that said, play the video below and shake it off girl!

My Fall Beauty Edit

Part of every woman's self-care regimen should include a bevy of amazing beauty products. When we take the time to care for ourselves inside and outside, we feel more beautiful, pampered and cared for. We walk with a little more swagger, we smile, engage in life and have more joy when we feel and look our best.  I am not suggesting this in a vain way but just putting your best foot forward elevates your mood and how you approach challenges in your life. So with that said, here are my new favorite products to assist you in curating the perfect beauty routine.

doTERRA Essential Skin Care Anti- Aging
This family of skin care products is designed to maximize the natural power of essential oils in helping to keep your skin feeling and looking young, healthy, and gorgeous. I have been using it for 2 weeks now and I have to say I think my skin looks and feels amazing! I also use Imortalle essential oil on my face morning and night.

e.l.f. Make Up Brush Cleaner Wipes
I don't know about you but I really do not like to wash my make-up brushes. I always washed them with hot soapy water and it took 2 days for them to dry. I picked up these little wipes 6 months ago and never used them. I found them while cleaning out my bathroom cabinet last week and I was like "hey my brushes need some cleaning so why not?" OMG so easy and quick! Love these wipes and will be using much more frequently to keep my make-up brushes clean! And for the price of $3.00 per box  you cannot beat it!

Lancôme CILS Booster XL
This innovative mascara primer gives your lashes an XL boost with just one sweep, gliding on in even coats to smooth your lashes and maximize the results of your favorite mascara. The magic behind this mascara base is the conditioning formula—featuring micro-fibers and Vitamin E—to add extra length and thickness to your lashes for added visible performance to your mascara. I love this stuff and cannot start my day without it!

Too Faced Hangover RX Face Primer
I purchased this a week ago to try it as I curious about the coconut water and probiotics. I have to say of all the primers I have tried, this is the winner!
When long days of work and late nights of play give you a beauty hangover, this is your instant cure. Hangover is a revolutionary makeup primer infused with coconut water, probiotics and skin revivers that work together to boost skin’s radiance, promote elasticity and help hydrate while locking down makeup for fresher, longer and more flawless wear.

It cosmetics CC+ Cream
I was introduced to this amazing cream by my good friend Janet. I tried it once and was hooked! Developed with plastic surgeons, it truly gives you full, flawless, perfect coverage and protects your skin with SPF 50+ UVA/UVB broad-spectrum physical sunscreen. I use it daily with and add a small amount of doTERRA Immortelle Anti-Aging Blend Essential Oil.

Clinically shown to give you 179% of skin hydration, smooth skin texture and enhance skin brightness, this breakthrough color-correcting cream never creases or cracks and instantly camouflages skin imperfections including dark spots. Plus, it’s infused with an advanced anti-aging serum made of hydrolyzed collagen, peptides, niacin, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and vitamins A, B, C and E that work in harmony to diffuse the look of wrinkles, minimize pores and give you a more radiant, supple and flawless-looking complexion.

Buxom Mascara
I originally bought this for my daughter Audrey a couple of years ago while high on the spinning world of cosmetics at Sephora. You know what I am talking about! She wasn't using it so I grabbed it and tried it on my barely there eyelashes. You know what they say, bigger is better. With this bestselling, volumizing mascara, you'll get big, outrageously full lashes with curves to spare. The vitamin-enriched, clump-resistant formula deepens, darkens and thickens lashes with rich black color while the hourglass-shaped brush evenly coats lashes from root to tip for perfect separation and definition.

Tarte Park Avenue Princess Bronzer
Another find from Audrey's makeup drawer..... She got this as a mini version in a Ipsy make-up sample kit. I asked to borrow it one day and didn't want to give it back. I love the shimmer and the color I get from it. You can contour and layer to create any bronze look you want! This is tarte’s best-selling bronzing powder in the iconic park ave princess™ shade.

If you have not discovered Kristin Ess' hair care line at Target, you should run out and get yo self some pronto. I have very difficult hair to work with and I have now been using three of her products the Working Serum, the Working Thickening Spray and the Working Texture Spray. LOVE them for their amazing smell, how they work and the cost. It is a win/win/win!

Kristin Ess Hair began with a simple idea: create an affordable collection of luxury haircare and styling products that would give everyone the chance to create modern, perfectly-imperfect hair. Who better to make all of our #hairgoals come true than Kristin Ess? With twenty-two years of expertise as a top hairstylist and colorist, along with her intimate insight into what products were truly needed to create the most beautiful hairstyles, Kristin developed the range of cleansers, conditioners, dry and wet stylers that we’ve all been waiting for.

Bobbie Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder Antigua 2
I got this illuminating bronzing powder in March when I had not seen the sun in a while. You all remember last winter, right?  I was actually looking for a new lip color as a little pick me up. The lady at Nordstrom said that I really needed this bronzer to "not look dead." I was thankful for her honesty and quickly added this bronzer to my lipstick purchase. I use it every day even with my summer bronzer. It does make you look a little more alive! Formulated with a perfect blend of sheer powders and micro pearls, this bronzer helps give skin a seamless, naturally radiant glow. Sheer mica powder and flat pearls reflect light and give skin beautiful luminosity without ever looking muddy or chalky.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
I recently took a break from using this and had to go back. If you want your eye shadow to last all day long, this product is for you, It also creates a perfect foundation for your eye shadow to look flawless. The number-one primer* for indestructible, all-day eye shadow, this legendary Eyeshadow Primer Potion delivers everything you could possibly want in an eye primer: No creasing. More vibrant color. Smoother application. Eyeshadow Primer Potion features space-age polymer technology that fills in any imperfections on the skin’s surface, prepping your lids for ALL-day shadow. Of course, every shade is paraben-free.

H2O - SOMA Water Pitcher
Drink more water... We hear this all day but it is true!  I recently purchased this while on a trip to Seattle. I was tired of using so many bottles of water at work. The waste was killing me. I keep it filled with water in the fridge at work. I fill up every hour or when I take a potty break. I love the design and the filter is even better because it removes heavy metals like mercury, in addition to chlorine. It’s made from 60% plant based and renewable materials, which means a lower carbon footprint.

I hope you are having a beautiful start to fall!

How I get ready for back to school

I cannot believe that it is that time of the year where we are bombarded by backpacks, pencils and everything a college student needs to have the swankiest of dorm rooms every time we walk into a store.

While I am grateful that the 100 degree days are over and the smoke from the regional fires is gone, I am still savoring my last days of summer but also getting excited about the possibilities of another school year. Even though I am not in school ( just work in one), it still is exciting to me. Maybe it is the up coming change in seasons, school shopping,  or just another new start. I like new starts.

As the new school year approaches I have a few things that I like to do to ensure an easy transition for me and my kids back into the school year schedule.

Closet Edit
Now is a great time to take an hour or so and do an edit on you closet. Take out anything you haven't worn over the summer. Get rid of clothing that is too small or too big, and that you just are not that in love with.  Go through each article of clothing. Make a list of what you need to pick up for fall as this will help you not overbuy. Also don't neglect to clean out your undies and bras. Toss the ratty looking pieces and make sure your bras still fit you well.  Check your fall shoes and take your boots to the shoe repair shop for a tune up!

Here is what I added to my closet this fall.  Hinge block heel bootie, crushed velvet slip dress, grey skinny jeans, velvet leggings and of course my new ASICS for fall. I know a serious black trend... Do not judge

Create an Essential Oil Emergency Kit
I created this little kit for my daughter Audrey to take to school with her but I liked it so much I made one for myself. This kit is perfect for all your healthcare needs when you are in a pinch! The little drams are perfect to just pop into your cosmetic bag in your purse.

My kit has Peppermint oil for headaches, tummy problems, and for a quick pick me up! OnGuard Protective Blend for a hand sanitizer and to use immediately if you get a little scratchy throat or are beginning to feel sick. Wild Orange I use for an energy lift and combined with peppermint it rocks! Also use it if you are feeling a little low on energy or down, Wild Orange is great for uplifting your spirits. Melaleuca or Tea Tree Oil is a great oil for any skin issue such as a pimple or scrapes, tooth aches, cold sores, It is a great healing oil. Clary Sage & Balance oils I put these together and called it my Moody Teen Blend but this is good for PMS, or when you are feeling upset, angry or need to be more balanced. It is also good for anxiety and depression. I always have my Deep Blue Rub for sore muscles and aches. This magical cream take the pain away in seconds. Breath Vapor stick is critical for breathing issues - we all have asthma in my house. It is also great to use right before a workout to open airways. OnGuard Protective Blend throat drops. I love these little cinnamon, wild orange and clove flavored drops that help with a scratchy throat and strengthen your body's immune system. Fall Food
This time of the year is so awesome because all the fabulous fruit and veggies are so fresh but I am beginning to crave some of my favorite fall dishes and comfort food. I just got out my cookbooks and marked a few pages to get me thinking about fall food.

The Pioneer Woman's meatloaf add some mashed potatoes and a salad and you are good to go!  White Bean and Chicken Chili from Giada De Laurentiis add fresh crusty bread or cornbread muffins for an easy meal. Fresh Corn Salad from Ina Garten is a perfect side dish for a nice piece of salmon.  Loving the Grilled Sweet Potato Wedges from Bobby Flay. These are great with steak, pork tenderloin or salmon.  My kids favorite meal, Ina's Chicken Stew with Herb Biscuits so easy and a must have in your fall repertoire!  Fall wold not be complete without the Best Tomato Soup Ever from The Pioneer Woman. Add some grilled cheese sandwiches...heaven!

Pantry Check
I always get a little giddy when my pantry is full. Maybe it comes from my mother's mid-west upbringing or that I love that I can pull everything out of my pantry I need to make just about any meal. I always do a thorough cleaning of my pantry at the end of the summer. I take everything out and wipe down all  of the shelving, toss any expired or stale items. Vacuum the chips crumbs  left by my teenagers and take inventory of what I need to restock. Lots of chicken stock for soups, beans and pastas to quickly make healthy and comforting food. Here are the 10 items I always have on hand.

Beans, Rice, mustard, olive oil, canned tomatoes, organic chicken stock, various pastas, breadcrumbs, corn salsa, and dried fruit.

Swap Out Your Summer Handbag
This is the time where I switch my more casual summer handbag for a more structured bag for fall. I will always lean towards black.  Here are some of my favorite bags.

Michael Kors Mercer handbag, Coach satchel, Louis Vuitton Never Full tote and Kate Spade Dunne Lane Lake satchel.

Happy getting ready for another school year!!

Why marrying the prince is not alway a good idea

If you were raised when I was, you were watching Disney movies every Sunday night at 7:00 pm right after Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom bathed, PJs on ready for bed with a bowl of freshly made popcorn.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's as a girl was a strange time. There were so many mixed messages sent to us young impressionable women. For example, you can have it all, you can bring home the bacon$$ and of course make dinner for everyone. Then after you worked all day, you made dinner for the family, got the kids to bed, cleaned the house, did some laundry, you were supposed to slip into your sexy nighty and "make your man feel like a man." Sweet Jesus, it makes me tired to even think about what I just wrote!

The woman's movement was confusing because what was happening in society did not mimic what we were watching on TV and what was happening in our homes.  Women were fighting to have the same rights and respect as men but we still had to pick up most of the responsibility for the housework and caring for the kids even if we worked full or part time. I saw my own mother struggle with this. Totally unfair.  Today the wage gap is still a thing and yet we as women are more focused on our thigh gap. Head scratcher...

But we still all watched those Disney movies and dreamed of being rescued by our very own Prince Charming. Hey I won't lie, I loved Frozen!  We still want to be swept off our feet and whisked off to the castle to live happily ever after while little birds and animals sing to us. Well so far the only people I know who that has worked for is William and Kate. Go William and Kate! You have to admit they are really cute.

My ex-husband had once been dubbed as "The Prince of Walla Walla" by a very famous wine publication right after he left me as I was recovering from chest wall cancer.  Now I could take this post in a few different directions,  however, my point here is that marrying the "prince" is not alway your smartest move. I did and he left when I needed him the most.

I believe that wanting the prince implies that we need to be "rescued" in some way. It implies that we need someone else to take care of us. It implies that we will sit at his side and be an accessory in his life and not live ours. Now I love me a good romantic movie any day,  but I think we need to focus on rescuing ourselves FIRST rather than waiting for Prince Charming to ride in on a white horse and take us to some fairytale life that he has created.

I am not suggesting at all that we don't need anyone in our lives. Our lives would not be as fulfilled without partners, kids, friends, family and even co-workers.

What I am suggesting today, is that we focus on ourselves though self-care, being independent and making our own dreams come true. This will make us better women, mothers, friends and partners because when we are fulfilling our own desires and taking care of ourselves we have something to actually bring back to these relationships. Not some tired cranky woman who wants roll over and go to sleep in her ratty t-shirt and shorts.

I hear from so many women who struggle with the concept of balance in their lives. Finding time to recharge in their ever busy days. Well you have to take that time first and protect it like a mother bear, otherwise you are screwed because there is always someone or something in your life that will eat that time right up!

When you make self-care and self-love a priority, your life will flourish. How do you do this you ask?  I am going to give you a 7 day self-care challenge that will help you practice your self-care skills. Each day do the following and I would recommend writing it down.

  • Drink 8 glasses of water- set your phone timer to remind you each hour
  • Fuel your body with healthy food- cut out the sugar ladies!
  • Move your body in some way other than housework
  • Do one thing just for you
  • Read something you enjoy for 30 minutes
  • Connect with a friend via email, phone or in person
  • Write down 5 things you are grateful for each night

Nothing hard here. I  just want you to get in the habit of self-care through these easy steps. You my friend will not need Prince Charming to take care of you becasue you are doing the job just fine!

Just Jump

I recently went on vacation to Montana with my daughter. It was the first summer vacation I was able to take in two years because I was undergoing reconstruction surgery on my chest in my quest to recover from the aftermath of chest wall cancer. I had spent my previous 2 summers at the University of Washington Hospital. Not exactly what I had in mind but that is all behind me now!

The weather was amazing, the scenery was spectacular and the friends and kids, off the hook! We spent our days in and on the water, reading books, jet skiing, drinking wine and all things Flathead Lake.  Half-way through our trip, we took a boat out to this place called the "rocks."  At this particular place you had to jump off the boat and swim to the bottom of the rocks where you climb up as high as you want and then you jump.

So, what I should share with you is that I am very afraid of heights and I just completed having the left side of my chest completely reconstructed. So I was a pretty nervous when my daughter Audrey asked me to jump with her. But it was hot, I had to pee and I needed to prove to myself that I could still do this after all that I have been through in the last 4 1/2 years.  So up the rocks I went!

In the end it was not so hard. It was actually fun and freeing and I felt like a kid again. The first time in a long, long time I had felt that way.  So what did I learn from this rock jumping experience?

Well, I learned to just jump. I don't mean in a stupid crazy way, like head first in shallow water, but sometimes in life you just need to jump. Jump in feet first and scream "hell yes!" Ladies, this is the way we MUST approach our lives. This is the only life you have to live so you better make it magnificent. When you choose not to jump, what are you missing out on? What opportunities, what relationships, what experiences are you letting pass you by that could make your life more fabulous? Trust, love, money, happiness, peace? What is it that you want for your life?  Decide and then jump! Do not wait another second or it WILL pass you by.

The thing is, when you "practice" jumping maybe it is just one little jump at a time, you can work up to bigger jumps, higher heights, and larger dreams as you practice and build your jumping muscle. The whole point here is to practice jumping each and every day so that it becomes natural and effortless. This is when life becomes really interesting and rewarding. It is when great things happen, you fall in love, get a new job, start your own company, fly to Russia and take the Orient Express because you are obsessed with Agatha Christie novels or Dr. Zhivago . It is all right there at your fingertips. All for the taking and all for you... if you just jump.

How I make my rest more beautiful

I have been a really crappy sleeper my whole life, just ask my mom. I started taking Benadryl at 13 just to be able to sleep. My issues are anxiety and an overactive brain when I finally slow down to rest my little head. The challenge is my brain does not get the "time to go to sleep" memo.

As a women who is entering menopause, sleep becomes even more of an issue. I have tried a ton of things and even met with one of the top sleep specialists in the country, Dr. Richard Simon. He told me that having a baby ruined my sleeping habits. Well sort of late to change that!

Before I go into my sleep routine, I must mention that you should not have any screen time for at least one hour before bed. So, get the TV out of your room and get off your phone! My phone is in Airplane mode every night and in my bathroom. You will be shocked at how much better you sleep with this plan.

Sleep is vital to my ability to function and be productive the following day, so I have curated a little bedtime ritual to make my rest the very best it can be.

First I got myself two of these luxurious pillows. I cannot sleep without them. I roll it in my suitcase when I travel. I found them when I stayed at the Historic Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wa. I use one under my head and one in between my legs. It is like a security blanket for me. I even took it to the hospital when I had my surgeries! I of course sprayed it with OnGuard, Melaleuca and Frankincense to ward off MARSA. ICK!

The next step to my sleeping routine is to set up my diffuser for the night. There are so many diffusers on the market to choose from. Make sure you get one that will run for 8 hours. My base essential oil for the night is always Vetiver. It is so grounding for me and I just love the smell. There are a ton of "sleep recipes" on Pinterest, pick one that suits you or change it up depending on the time of year and your health needs.

I use Vetiver as my base every night in my diffuser.  I add other oils to compliment the scent or to assist me with my current mood or health issues. Right now I am adding Cedarwood, Breath, and Basil to help with my allergies.

I know I have talked about meditation before but it is important enough to mention again. I find for me, meditation puts me in a better mindset to slow down my brain and get ready to sleep. I use guided meditations from an app called Headspace and I also use the free guided meditation from Deepak Chopra and the Chopra Center.

When I really want to shut out the world, I pull out this little sleeping mask. My friend Jayne told me about it years ago and I will not use any other brand. I have trained my brain that when I wear this, it is time to sleep.  And it works! Get it at Brookstone

In my quest for better sleep, white noise was one of the things they suggested to add to your bedroom.  I need something to take my mind off of it's rambling thoughts and white noise is perfect. There are apps that you can download but I have taken to turning my phone on Airplane Mode each night and putting it in my bathroom so this method doesn't work for me.  I use this machine from Dohm. It is the official sound conditioner from the National Sleep Foundation. I told you sleep was important to me!

My newest habit for sleep is a Deep Sleep Pillow Spray - Along with my essential oils in my diffuser, I made my own version of this spray in a glass bottle with distilled water, Lavender, Patchouli, Cedar Wood,  Vetiver, and Roman Camomile doTERRA essential oils.

I hope that you might find a few of these ideas helpful for curating a perfect night of sleep. When we rest our bodies and minds, we can be the very best version of ourselves. So much more to say about getting good sleep but all this sleep talk is making me tired! Nighty Night!

My Summer Freak Out List!

It is that time again ladies! Summer is in full swing and here is my official Summer Freak Out List.

The Mule - So happy this little puppy came back into fashion. So cute with skinny jeans, cropped flair pants and just about anything! They are the perfect seasonal transition shoe! Love, love love! Get yo self a pair today!

Tunic Tops - You cannot go wrong picking up a classic tunic top to wear this summer. Every store has a version from boho to classic. I particularly love the ones from Tory Burch. You can wear it as a top, dress ( if long enough) or as a swim cover-up.

The Statement Necklace - Want to add some summer sizzle to your outfit? Then throw on a statement necklace. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Think Carrie Bradshaw and how she wore long pearls to bed with Mr. Big. Charming Charlie has great merchandise at reasonable prices to try this little fashion trick.

The Strapless Dress - Nothing says summer like a strapless dress! Bring it on- long, short and in-between!

Dining Al Fresco -  Get some candles, party lights and set a pretty table. My perfect easy go to meal for dining al fresco is salmon with Tom Douglas' Rub with Love, a fresh tomato, cucumber and onion salad with olive oil salt and pepper, sautéed corn fresh off the cob with butter and basil and lavender ice cream with fresh berries.  Add a nice Rose and some rustic bread and you are good to go!

Essential Oils  - I love my essential oils and some are more summery than others. Right now I am digging on Peppermint essential oil. You can add it to ice water for a delish pick-me-up drink. Put some on your head to cool you off on a hot day, pop a couple drops in your mouth to freshen your breath, or rub in your hands and inhale to increase productivity and alertness.

White Sneakers - So I finally jumped on the white tennis shoe bandwagon with these cute little Keds! So comfy and darling on! I think they are the perfect for summer as the holes give you a little air flow.  I wear them with jeans and dresses.

The perfect summer wine Rose! Nothing says summer like a good Rose! Sparkling, French, pick a grape any grape they are all good in my book.

Happy Summer peeps!
